Choosing a safety helmet
Select a helmet by the hazard on site. General construction and manufacturing use a helmet to IS 2925 or EN 397. Work near live electrical equipment needs an electrically insulating helmet to EN 50365. Bump caps (EN 812) protect only against minor knocks and are not a substitute for a safety helmet.
Ratchet adjustment suits helmets shared across shifts; pin-lock suits individual issue. Use a chin strap for work at height.
Helmet colour convention
Colour coding varies by company. A common convention on Indian sites:
- White – managers, engineers
- Yellow – workers
- Blue – electricians, operators
- Red – fire and emergency
- Green – safety officers
- Orange – visitors, signallers
