Bow or dee
A bow shackle has a rounded body that takes load from more than one direction, so it goes where two or more sling legs meet. A dee shackle is narrower and is meant for a straight, in-line pull between two fittings.
Size a shackle by the WLL marked on its body, never by the pin diameter alone, and keep the load on the centre line of the bow rather than pulling it sideways.
Screw pin or bolt
A screw pin suits rigging that is made up and taken down often. Where the shackle stays in place or the pin could turn under a moving load, use a bolt, nut and split pin type instead.
