Choosing hearing protection
Choose by the noise level at the workstation. Aim for an exposure under the ear of 70 to 80 dB(A): too little attenuation leaves the wearer exposed, too much cuts off speech and warning signals.
Disposable foam plugs suit high-turnover issue. Reusable and banded plugs suit intermittent noise. Ear muffs suit workers who move in and out of noisy areas.
Ratings
SNR (EN 352) and NRR (ANSI) express attenuation in decibels. Ear muffs are tested to EN 352-1, ear plugs to EN 352-2 and helmet-mounted muffs to EN 352-3.
