Choosing a detector
A four-gas detector monitoring oxygen, combustibles, carbon monoxide and hydrogen sulphide is the standard for confined space entry. Single-gas detectors suit a known, single hazard. Photoionization detectors measure volatile organic compounds at low concentrations.
Bump testing and calibration
Bump test a portable detector before each day's use, and calibrate at the interval the manufacturer gives. For hazardous areas, check the instrument's ATEX, IECEx or CSA certification against the zone classification.
